What is St. Valentine’s Day except a marketing ploy by the card companies, florists and chocolate sellers to get you to part with your hard-earned paycheck, all in the name of lurve?!
While I don’t believe all the blurb about the requirement to buy gifts, or even cards, for Valentine’s Day (although it’s nice), I do believe in any excuse to celebrate the people and the things we love. To that end, here are five reasons I love geocaching (I kept it to five as I could write forever!).
1. It Gets Me Outside
My love of geocaching has led me to uncover another love: the outdoors! I was more of a change-my-clothes-immediately-if-I-get-a-speck-of-dirt-on-them type of child, than a tree-climbing, puddle-splashing type of child, so the outdoors was not a location I enjoyed being in. All that changed when I discovered geocaching – now I feel like the forests and hills are calling to me if I don’t get out there regularly!
2. It’s Fun
Speaking of that inner child that geocaching has unleashed, there is almost always a sense of child-like adventure and excitement about a geocaching hunt. Nobody is ever too old to act silly and geocaching offers a great outlet for that.
3. It’s Good for Me
Going nowhere on a treadmill in the gym is my idea of hell – believe me, I’ve tried it – and while I have huge respect for gym devotees, I have found my own fitness centre with geocaching: nature! Don’t get me wrong, I still pretty much hate hiking (will that ever change?!) but I love the views at the top and the feeling of accomplishment at conquering the hill or mountain when it’s done!
4. I’ve Made Some Amazing Friends
It’s almost a cliché at this point but geocachers are really some of the best people you will ever meet! At least, that’s my experience not only in my own community here in Ireland but also whenever I’ve attended or hosted an event elsewhere. I wouldn’t have met some of my closest friends if it wasn’t for this game.
5. I Met My Fiancé Because of Geocaching
If I hadn’t have attended a geocaching event in Belfast two years ago, I most likely would never have met the muggle! We’re getting married this summer and really, it’s all because of geocaching. We got engaged a year ago in Barcelona and he proposed with a fake rock geocache – a rock within a rock! Yes, he rocks.
Check out my guest post over on the Geocaching Blog, about why you should make a muggle your valentine this year!
Why do you love geocaching? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Caching!

Thanks Sarah, I share your views on Valentines Day! My wife calls me a geocacher that walks, and you are one of them also. Geocaching is amazing, for some reason I haven’t ventured out this half term yet. I think its because I have all the local caches and am rubbish at puzzles! Jimmy
I moved last April so still have a lot of clearing to do! I have neglected puzzles lately, I need to get back in to it!
I love the made-up meme on John Muir’s quote! We’re not exactly dedicated geocachers, but we enjoy it every single time! x
