When the scales come off easily then the flesh immediately below is okay to eat. So they like to have air around the roots and also moisture.
But if the soil is too wet it can rot the roots and prevent the plant from getting water, same result. Other than that, it looks like a pretty happy plant :) Thanks everyone!!
